Well, that’s not supposed to happen.

With all the technology, driving aids, and safety features in vehicles these days from the tires and wheels to the infotainment, things are safer than ever. But that doesn’t mean that there are still faults and issues that could make things a bit hairy on the road.

Automotive journalist, Pablo González, was testing the new Jeep Renegade SUV for km77.com when he noticed an issue rear its ugly head upon heavy braking.

With both the 1.6- and 2.0-engined Jeep Renegade models, González was able to lock the brakes so hard up front that the rear tires and wheels came up off the pavement completely.

Not only is that absolutely never supposed to happen with the rear tires and wheels, but it’s also seriously unsafe in different situations, especially when drivers are attempting to avoid a head-on collision. This can cause the car to flip and put occupants in a very unsafe situation.

After getting the 1.6-liter Jeep Renegade to lean forward, González attempted it on the other 2.0-liter model to see if that changed anything. Under hard braking, the rear tires and wheels still lifted up but to a lesser degree. Upon further testing, González was not able to replicate the situation.

FCA did issue this statement though:
“The Jeep Renegade, which features Electronic Roll Mitigation and Electronic Stability Control as standard equipment, meets or exceeds all mandated safety requirements. The Company is investigating the circumstances surrounding these demonstrations.”
