Injecting some sport into the Targa.

The Porsche 911 Targa was a compromise back when it first hit dealerships. Due to the strict regulations that the United States was expected to impose on convertibles, Porsche came up with the Targa which offered an open top with the safety of a coupe. Fifty years later, the Targa is still an important vehicle in the 911 lineup and to celebrate the golden anniversary, Porsche is putting the GTS badge on the sports car for a package that includes more power, black rims, a sport-oriented interior, and more.

Just about 13-percent of all Porsche 911 models are Targa variants, making it quite a popular choice among consumers. That success has led them to create a more high-performance version called the 911 Targa 4 GTS that includes the potent GTS engine and chassis with exclusive styling like black rims and lettering.

Powering all four wheels of the Porsche 911 Targa 4 GTS is the more powerful 3.8-liter, naturally-aspirated flat-six cylinder engine that churns out 430 horsepower and 325 lb-ft. of torque, a generous boost compared to the standard Targa 4S. This is paired up with either a seven-speed manual or dual-clutch PDK, the latter of which enables the sports car to reach 60 mph in just 4.1 seconds as it powers all four of the black rims. Top speed is pegged at 186 mph for the PDK variants and 188 mph for those with a manual transmission.

Thanks to the all-wheel drive setup, the rear fenders flare out an extra 22 mm with the rear tires gaining an extra 10 mm, each. This gives the Porsche 911 Targa 4 GTS a more athletic and powerful appearance and goes well with the GTS-specific exterior upgrades. New 20-inch black rims borrowed from the 911 Turbo S are worn while black ‘GTS’ signatures are featured on the doors and ‘911 Targa 4 GTS’ is imprinted on the rear bumper. Dark-tinted, bi-xenon headlights with the Porsche Dynamic Light System (PDLS) stare ahead atop of the sport design front fascia with black painted pieces. The PASM chassis rounds out the performance upgrades along with the new sport exhaust system wearing chrome tailpipes.

Inside, the entire cabin is geared towards driving performance and involvement. The four-way adjustable Sport Plus seats are covered in lightweight alcantara along with the rest of the cabin and wear special ‘GTS’ logos on the headrests. New, vehicle-specific gauges and the Sport Chrono stopwatch add to the overall driving package and are unique to the 911 Targa 4 GTS.
