Why Mounting Tires and Wheels the Redneck Way is a Bad Idea

Just watch and learn.

We’ve all seen those crazy videos where someone demonstrates how to mount tires and wheels using a can of flammable liquid and a match/lighter. There’s science behind it and when done properly, it works perfectly in a tough situation. However, when it’s not done right, really bad things can happen – and we’re not just talking about your vehicle, tires and wheels, here.

The backwoods, redneck, in-a-tight-pinch way of mounting a tire can be a pretty neat trick to show off to friends and/or make a video. In order to do it right, a flammable liquid should be put around the rim of the wheel and the tire. Then the chemical must be ignited and quickly burnt to cause the air inside the tire to create a vacuum, sucking the tire to the rim. It’s great to use on tires and wheels in a pinch if you’re stranded in the wilderness with only a few tools and very few ways to get back home.

This man tried to do that but it literally backfired right on him. His truck had been in an accident and its tires and wheels had to be mounted again, so he started with the passenger side rear pair. Using a can of carb cleaner, he sprayed the rim and the tire – too generously. He then took a match, lit it, and threw it at the wheel and tire, causing it to ignite and just burn slowly.

To prevent the tire from melting right on the rim, he hit the flames with his gloves until he thought it was extinguished – but it wasn’t. When he went to push the wheel on, the rest of the mixture quickly ignited and almost burned his face off. Thankfully, he wasn’t hurt, and the tire was successfully mounted, but it just shows that you shouldn’t try this at home.
