Who needs Tires and Rims when you have Paper?!

Lada Paper Rims and Tires

Why not, right?

Everyone’s favorite Russian mechanic is back again and this time his idea for tires and rims is even crazier than before. He’s used electrical tape to make two tires and rims, drilled screws into rubber to make homemade snow tires, and even made an engine with wood cylinders – just because.

This time around, he’s armed with 10,000 sheets of A4 printer paper and he’s making a rim out of it for his Lada. Why? Again, why the hell not?!

Lada Paper Rims and Tires

For this project, the 10.000 sheets of paper were glued in alternating slabs of six sheets vertically and then horizontally 1,666 times to form the basis for the tires and rims That, in and of itself, is utterly insane just for a small video experiment, but more power to him! After a considerable amount of time gluing all of the sheets together and compressing them with wood boards, the team added more glue to each slab and compressed them once again into a large slab approximately 60 cm in height.

After a couple of weeks of compression and drying, the team brought the slab to a band saw where they cut the paper into the shape of a wheel. Afterwards, the challenge of mounting came up. So, our favorite Russian decided to cut the hub off one of the steel tires and rims on a Lada and drill holes in the paper to mount it to the new Lada’s hub.

After everything was set, it was time to go for a drive. The paper wheel functioned just as you would expect and gradually fell apart after being subjected to the forces of driving and the road conditions. However, it was still a fun – albeit lengthy experiment that we can all enjoy in a 10-second video, so thank you.
