Watch these Alaskans Launch Their Cheap Rims off a Cliff!

Alaska Cheap Rims 4th of July Celebration

Time to celebrate!

A normal 4th of July celebration in the United States usually consists of friends, fireworks, some food, and celebration of the nation’s independence. In Glacier View, Alaska, things are a little wilder. While all the aforementioned parts of a normal celebration take place, the spectacle of vehicles flying through the air and their cheap rims crashing down on the ground below are part of an even more exciting celebration.

Like many towns, there are beater vehicles that are at the end of their lives with cheap rims that need to be scrapped. But, instead of just junking them, this town decided to make them part of the celebration. The celebration sees clunkers modified and decorated and thrown off the bluff in front of a crowd of spectators to celebrate the 4th of July.

This year, party organizer, Arnie Hrncir, launched three vehicles off the bluff and onto the ground – a feat that has never been done prior to this year’s celebration. “Any little kid’s dream is to roll a rock down a hill. This is times 10,” said Arnie’s son, Dustin Hrncir.

The ‘90s Nissan Pathfinder and its cheap rims was al decked out and decorated for the event. It was hooked up to the steering system and the throttle was smashed remotely, allowing it to reach an estimated speed of 55 mph before launching off the cliff. The Nissan traveled an estimated 100 yards through the air before its cheap rims landed on the dirt below, setting a record for the event.

The 2015 4th of July event saw 550 guests consume more than 500 pounds of meat as they gathered to watch the car launching show that began in 2005. You can expect bigger crowds in the coming years with the popularity of the car launch too.
