Get ready to trip, man.

The 1970s were quite the time to be alive. All kinds of stuff was going on around the globe and people were just trying to stay groovy. The same was true for racing. What we have here is quite the treat as it’s a film from 1972 starring a one-make Citroen 2CV racing series with drivers putting their rims and tires in the dirt and everyone having a good time.

Titled ‘Pop Cross’, this film documents the 2CV Cross race held in Argenton sur Creuse on July 22nd, 1972. The race starred the iconic 2CV and drivers digging into the dirt with their rims and tires as they sped towards the finish line.

The film is a very interesting look into the racing world in the ‘70s. Basically, everything was a party and people were having a good time. Mechanics and drivers are smiling as they prep for the race by fixing engines, mounting rims and tires, and more; spectators are enjoying the festivities; and there’s also a random shot or two thrown in of people kissing. Why? We have no idea. It was just the ‘70s, man.

The Citroen 2CV was a rear-engined, weird French automobile that was unquestionably cool. A two-cylinder flat, four-stroke engine powered the rear rims and tires with these race cars using the 33 horsepower 602 cc engine that made its debut in 1970 – or at least we hope.

Despite the lack of power, the steps that teams took to shed weight were nothing short of impressive. This led to some seriously fun driving, lots of roll overs, and awesome footage.

Take a minute to just watch what racing was like in a different era.
