Customer-spec to get the job done.

Ford’s Super Duty trucks are designed to work. Whether it’s hauling, towing, or any other crazy job, these vehicles are designed to be put to work and do their jobs effectively. So, Ford asked a bunch of actual customers about how they would design their Super Duty vehicles from the engines to the truck rims and even interior.

Jack Mills, the owner of Plum Contracting, in Pittsburgh, PA, created himself a Ford F-350 Super Duty 4×4 Crew Cab XL that’s made to get the job done. New truck rims, a beefy engine, capable chassis, and even a few conveniences were all part of the new vehicle.

“My trucks are always loaded to capacity with the crew, their tools and equipment for any situation that might develop at a job site that could be as far as 300 miles from home base,” said Mills. “Plus, they always are towing a trailer or piece of equipment.”

At the heart of the Ford F-350 Super Duty 4×4 Crew Cab XL is a 6.7-liter Power Stroke turbodiesel V-8 engine that has gobs of torque to send to all four truck rims. A six-speed SelectShift automatic makes getting in the right gear easy while a 3.55 electronic locking axle ratio makes towing a breeze. Due to the nature of the business, Mills opted for a since rear wheel setup instead of the dual wheels on each side of the axle. This keeps the vehicle narrow for better capabilities.

“My job sites are road construction projects that normally have single lane closures, and the single rear wheels keep the truck narrow enough that the barrels don’t need to be moved for them to pass through,” said Mills. “The tailgate-mounted rear camera is a nice safety feature to help prevent back-up accidents and the upfitter switches make it easy for my shop to add additional lights and powered accessories.”

Capability is the name of the game here with the Ford F-350 Super Duty 4×4 Crew Cab XL. The eight-foot bed sits atop a 11,400-pound GVWR package, Heavy Front Suspension package, and 18-inch Argent-painted steel truck rims with painted hub cover and center ornament shod in 18-inch all-terrain tires.

Even the electronics are designed for work. A trailer brake controller helps keep trailers stable while Electronic shift-on-the-fly keeps power going properly. Heavy-duty vinyl seats are built to last a lifetime while remote-start, 10-minute engine idle shutdown, and platform running boards add a bit of convenience.
