Trimming down the pounds.

In the world of super cars, less weight means more performance. Ford has taken that philosophy to the new Ford GT with the track-focused Competition Series. The new Ford GT Competition Series is designed for those that love spending time on the track and crave added performance through lowering weight. Here, carbon fiber is used for the design, body work, car rims, and more while other weight-saving materials are used elsewhere.

“The Ford GT has racing in its blood,” said Raj Nair, Ford executive vice president, global product development, and chief technical officer. “The Competition Series was developed with the most hardcore track enthusiasts in mind, providing a tailored set of lightweight features and unique livery to match.”

Here, minimizing weight allows the 647 horsepower EcoBoost twin-turbocharged V-6 engine to maximize performance as it reaches the carbon fiber car rims.

Cutting weight and reducing the center of gravity on the new Competition Series is Perspex acrylic engine hatch cover and carbon fiber prop rod that reduces weight towards the roof. This lowers the center of gravity towards the road. Behind the driver a thinner and lighter Gorilla Glass bulkhead is also featured.

Matching the standard carbon fiber car rims and titanium lug nuts on the Ford GT Competition Series are other visual carbon fiber aspects. A gloss carbon fiber stripe runs the length of the super car while mirror caps, A-pillars, and lower body trim is also made of the same lightweight material with a gloss finish.

Inside, drivers can grab the F1 steering wheel clad in Ebony Alcantara along with the seats, instrument panel, and headliner. Exposed carbon fiber is used throughout while the infotainment system is deleted to cut weight. The air conditioning, radio, speaker, cup holders, and storage bins have also been removed for the sake of weight.
