Shredding its way into our hearts.

The Shelby GT350 Mustang from 1965 established itself as one of the best muscle cars of its time and quickly become a force of which to reckon on the street and track. That Shelby nameplate has adorned many sports cars since and now Ford is bringing it back for the sixth-generation Mustang. The new Shelby GT350 Ford Mustang has all sorts of exciting upgrades that will make it one of the best muscle cars on and off the racetrack. Everything from a high-revving V-8, new MagneRide dampers, and lightweight staggered wheels with a driver-oriented interior will set it apart from the muscle car pack.

“When we started working on this car, we wanted to build the best possible Mustang for the places we most love to drive – challenging back roads with a variety of corners and elevation changes – and the track on weekends,” said Raj Nair, Ford group vice president, Global Product Development. “Every change we made to this car was driven by the functional requirements of a powerful, responsive powerplant – nimble, precise handling and massive stopping power.”

Easily, the most exciting aspect of the new Shelby GT350 Ford Mustang is what sits beneath the hood. A new, naturally-aspirated 5.2-liter V-8 engine is used and sports a flat-plane crankshaft – the first of its kind in a production Ford V-8. This allows for a better exhaust gas flow and the engine to have a broader torque curve with higher revving characteristics. The new 5.2-liter will send over 500 horsepower and 400 lb-ft. of torque to each of the rear staggered wheels on the GT350. Power will be transferred through a six-speed manual gearbox with a Ford-tuned Torsen limited-slip differential for better overall traction.

Performance is the name of the game with the Shelby GT350 Ford Mustang and it’s obvious in the chassis from the staggered wheels to the components that sit behind them. The first use of new MagneRide dampers that utilize iron particles inside hydraulic fluid to instantly adjust to changing road conditions in as little as 10 milliseconds. Behind the staggered wheels sit Brembo six-piston fixed calipers with 394 mm rotors while four-piston calipers and 380 mm discs at the rear, making them the most track-capable braking system ever offered on a Ford vehicle. The finishing touch to the chassis are the strong 19 x 10.5 front and 19 x 11.0 rear staggered wheels with Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires.

The exterior is designed to perform as well. The front hood was shaped to be more streamlined and slim while integrating vents to cool the engine bay. A carbon fiber front grille features individual openings for the engine radiator, intake, and brake cooling ducts while a splitter sits at the bottom of the bumper. The rear sports a new diffuser and a trunk spoiler to generate downforce. Each of the front fenders are also extended outwards to accommodate for the wider track over the stock Ford Mustang.

Inside, two Recaro seats with special cloth hold onto driver and passenger while all of the shiny and chrome surfaces were removed to reduce sun glare. New gauges and a flat-bottomed steering wheel give drivers greater control on or off the track.

I’m still waiting for my GT Premium to arrive. 5.0L 435HP with 19 x 9.5″ rear wheels. If I had the option for “Shelby” 19 x 11″ rear wheels, I would have bought them instead. Any chance Ford would let me swap out the GT performance package wheels with those Shelby wheels?

How much more is the Shelby than the GT Premium?

I’m not sure Santa as we don’t carry the original Shelby wheels. I’m sure you’ll be good to go with the 19×9.5 though. Also please don’t forget me this Christmas ; )
