Time for some high-performance fun.
The Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban haven’t exactly been thought of as high-performance models. But, the American automaker is looking to change that with the new Rally Sport Truck or ‘RST’ package. Available on both the Tahoe and Suburban as a Performance Package, the SUVs gain a 420-horsepower engine, 10-speed automatic, new styling, and custom wheels.
Chevrolet has continually invested in Tahoe and Suburban, developing models with varying combinations of capability, technology and performance to meet the needs of different customers,” said Sandor Piszar, Chevrolet Truck Marketing director. “The RST is designed for customers who want a street performance look without sacrificing capability or refinement, along with the option of increased performance as well.”
Under the hood of the SUV is a new 6.2-liter V-8 engine – the first time it’s been used in the Tahoe. A total of 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft. of torque is sent to the custom wheels. New direct injection, Active Fuel Management, and continuously variable valve timing help generate more power with greater efficiency.
Putting that power to the custom wheels is an all-new 10-speed automatic gearbox. The wide 7.39 overall ratio between gears helps maximize efficiency and performance throughout the engine’s wide powerband. This enables the Tahoe RST to reach 60 mph from rest in less than 6.0 seconds while having a towing capacity of 8,400 lbs.
The ultra-fast Magnetic Ride Control active suspension system also comes as part of the RST Package in the Tahoe. This system continuously reads the road and adjusts the dampers instantly to provide the best traction and handling dynamics at a given time.
“When you want to hustle, it is incredibly fast, with significantly higher levels of acceleration, braking and road-holding grip,” said Eric Stanczak, chief engineer for Chevrolet full-size trucks. “When you want to relax, it is very refined, with exceptional ride comfort and interior quietness.”
Visually, the new RST Tahoe and Suburban get a bit more aggressive to reflect their new high-performance nature. The exterior features a new body-colored grille surround a door handles. Gloss Black is worn by the mirror caps, grille, roof rails, window trim, badging, and Chevrolet bowties. New 22-inch custom wheels are also featured with P285/45 R22 Bridgestone tires.
The new RST package will be available for the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban in the fall of 2017.
