The Baja 500 race is one of the most hardcore endurance competitions in the world. It sees vehicles from all different classes travel approximately 500 miles across the desert to take home the checkered flag. It’s unrelenting and oftentimes drivers are forced to work on their vehicles on the go. This year, Apdaly Lopez was able to cross the finish line with the win in his No. 5 truck armed with KMC Wheels.

Qualifying for the race was held at Urapan, Baja California, which proved to be a siltier course forcing drivers to have a more technical approach rather than all-out speed. Apdaly Lopez was able to quality with his KMC Wheels in 5th for the race on the course while the No. 17 truck of Eduardo Laguna started in the 15th position.

“This year’s course is very technical and starting 15th I will have to pace myself for the first half and see where we are once we get across Salada. Hopefully then we will be closer to the front and able to make our move for the win.” said Laguna.

Laguna and his No. 17 truck with KMC Wheels faced many obstacles during the race. A broken rear upper link forced him and his co-driver to stop and replace it during the race. Later, the No. 17 collided with a tree and lost the alternator at the Laguna Salada section of the race. The chase crew was able to fix the truck and it was sent back out, only to finish in 17th.

The No. 5 truck with Apdaly Lopez behind the wheel in the RPM Offroad truck with KMC Wheels was able to stay at the front of the pack for the entire race. Only a few minutes were lost when a brake line needed to be repaired by a nearby chase crew, but the rest of the run was incident-free. As the trucks began to speed through the Valley De Trinidad at mile 320, Apdaly was able to make it to second place. After repair issues forced the race-leading truck of Rob MacCachren to stop, Apdaly was able to take the lead, which he held for the last 100 miles to the finish line, 50 seconds ahead of the second-place truck.

“It feels incredible to win the Baja 500. It was a very long and difficult race, having no flat tires and fast pit stops helped us to pull off the win. I want to thank Clyde Stacy for the opportunity to race for the team,” said Apdaly.
