The previous-generation Chevrolet Camaro enjoyed quite the revival and saw a lot of special high-performance models, one of which was the 1LE package. For the first time ever, the hardcore handling package that includes all sorts of suspension options and lightweight car rims will be available on not just the V-8 SS models but the Camaro LT1 and 2LT Coupes with the V-6 engine.
“The Camaro 1LE packages follow a recipe any track-day enthusiast will appreciate,” said Al Oppenheiser, Camaro chief engineer. “Start with a lightweight, stiff structure and then add higher levels of suspension stiffness and damping, more aggressive tires, higher downforce, more powerful brakes and more cooling.
“The result delivers better performance in all measures,” said Oppenheiser. “In our development tests, the V-6 Camaro 1LE delivers lap times comparable with the previous-gen V-8 model. The 2016 Camaro SS 1LE sets the new benchmark for the segment, lapping the Big Willow track at Willow Springs three seconds faster than the standard Camaro SS.”
The 1LE package in the Camaro 1LT and 2LT Coupe models includes tighter suspension tuning for the track along with a new set of Brembo four-piston brakes sitting behind the new car rims. Special lightweight 20-inch forged aluminum wheels are wrapped in 245/40 R20 front and 275/35 R20 rear Goodyear Eagle F1 tires. This gives the V-6 models the ability to achieve an estimated 0.97 G of lateral grip, which can be measured on the available Performance data recorder.
The more powerful Camaro 1SS with the 1LE package gains quite a bit. The magnetic ride control pairs up with the FE4 suspension tuning along with new six-piston front Brembo calipers with 14.6-inch discs. Forged aluminum car rims are shod in 285/30 ZR20 and 305/30 ZR20 Goodyear Eagle F1 supercar tires. The new suspension goodies give the Camaro SS with the 1LE package the ability to achieve over 1.0G of lateral acceleration.
In addition to the forged car rims, the Camaro SS with the 1LE package also benefits from a segment-exclusive electronic differential with 3.73 ratio and a full track cooling package to keep the 455-horsepower V-8 engine regulated.
Both Camaro models wear new aerodynamics and painted body work as part of the 1LE package as well as new interior goodies.
The new 2017 Camaro SS and LT V-6 models with the 1LE package will be available in late 2016 with manual transmissions.
