After the announcement of the 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, nobody really thought that there would be a drop-top version of the car. Why chop the top off a car that’s so dedicated to performance anyways? Well, Chevrolet dug into their bag of tricks to retain the same performance characteristics and unveiled the 2017 ZL1 Convertible at the New York International Auto Show, showing that you can still spin your Camaro wheels with a folding top.

“Driving the Camaro ZL1 is best described as ‘fast with finesse,” said Mark Reuss, executive vice president of Global Product Development. “It is beautifully balanced, with perfect damping and isolation for optimal performance and driver confidence in virtually any situation – from the Pacific Coast Highway to Willow Springs to Pomona.”

What allows the new 2017 Camaro ZL1 convertible to be so slick and nimble is the sixth-generation’s structure and construction that is so stiff and rigid that it is built to support a convertible variant with only a few minor modifications to the structure. This enables all four of those Camaro wheels to be in constant contact with the pavement thanks to superb weight transfer from its construction.

Putting the power down to the rear Camaro wheels on the ZL1 convertible is the same 6.2-liter, supercharged V-8 engine as the coupe counterpart. A total of 640 horsepower and 640 lb-ft. of torque is sent through a choice of six-speed manual or 10-speed automatic gearboxes with an electronic limited-slip differential for impressive acceleration in any situation.

The athleticism of the new 2017 Camaro ZL1 convertible is also emphasized with the suspension and chassis. Here, a Magnetic Ride suspension provides instantaneous reactions to road conditions for optimum handling. Beefy six-piston front Brembo calipers with 15.35-inch two-piece rotors lend some serious stopping power. New 20-inch forged Camaro wheels come standard and are shod in Goodyear Eagle F1 supercar tires measuring 285/30 ZR20 up front and 305/30 ZR20 at the rear.
