Kettlebells are NOT good weights for your Car Wheels!

Unless you want to do some serious damage.

As the source for all of your wheel and tire needs, we cannot emphasize the importance of proper balancing. Having car wheels and tires that are out of balance can lead to faster wear, poor ride quality, or even damage other parts of your vehicle.

So, our favorite crazy Russian mechanics got to answering a question that nobody asked once again (actually, they did) and got serious about car wheels and tires that are improperly balanced.

Garage 54 took their tried-and-true old Lada and a couple of kettlebells, and got to work. They took off the car wheels and attached the weights to each rim using a chain. Each kettlebell weighed in at 32 kg (70.5 lb) kettlebells, so the unbalanced part was really emphasized here for the sake of science and entertainment.

After mounting both of the car wheels to the rear axle, it was time to drive. The weights and chain make quite a racket and caused the ride quality to suffer immediately. At slow speeds, the rear axle was banging around and moving considerably. The kettlebells were also smashing against each of the fenders and bending the rims with each rotation.

So, they went’ faster while turning sideways because why not?! This resulted in the entire car shaking and one of the chains breaking apart. The team tried as best as they could to get the other chain to snap unsuccessfully.

The end result was pretty brutal. The fenders were both ruined, the rear axle was shredded, and the suspension was destroyed.

While this is an exaggeration of what unbalanced wheels and tires can do, it does showcase the importance of this relatively simple piece of maintenance.
