Time to slice and dice the racetrack!
Chevrolet is showing off the most track-focused, hardcore Camaro ever made with their new ZL1 1LE. The new 1LE package brings the already formidable Camaro ZL1 to the next level thanks to new aerodynamics, lower weight, motorsport-bred suspension, and lightweight custom wheels.
“The track-focused 1LE package offers progressive levels of performance across the Camaro lineup, from the V6 1LE to the SS 1LE,” said Al Oppenheiser, Camaro chief engineer. “But with the new ZL1 1LE, the progression takes a quantum leap — this is the ultimate track-day Camaro.”
Even though the ZL1’s LT4 supercharged V-8 didn’t receive any power upgrades, the 650-horsepower output that reaches the rear custom wheels is even more exciting thanks to all of the new upgrades. In all four areas were focused on by engineers to make an even more high-performance sports car on the track.
Pushing those new custom wheels and model-specific tires to the pavement on the Camaro ZL1 1LE are new carbon fiber aerodynamics. A new rear wing generates downforce along with new air deflectors and dive planes up front on the bumper.
The new Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE also features a lightweight Multimatic DSSV damper set developed from racing. This improves control and handling while aspects such as the front ride height and rear stabilizer bar can be adjusted to optimize dynamics on the track.
Hitting the pavement are new Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar 3R tires that have been designed specifically for the Camaro ZL1 1LE. The tires warm up faster and help achieve up to 1.10-G of lateral acceleration. These tires are worn by new custom wheels made from forged aluminum alloy. Their forged construction reduces weight by approximately 1.5-lbs. per wheel for better overall performance, despite being an inch wider than the standard ZL1 wheels.
“The new Camaro ZL1 1LE offers the supreme track experience,” said Mark Dickens, executive director, Chevrolet Performance Variants, Parts and Motorsports Engineering. “It’s the pinnacle of Camaro performance and advances the 1LE’s nearly 30-year legacy of uncompromising, track-tailored capability.”
The new Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 will be sold later this year as a 2018 model. Pricing will be announced at a later date.
