Through the desert sands.

In case you missed it, Lamborghini is currently working on a high performance SUV to add to their already exotic lineup. All the automakers seem to be doing it now, from the high-end to the high-performance brands, and Lamborghini is getting on that train with the new Urus. This machine is capable of putting its custom wheels on not just the pavement, but the dirt too.

Years ago, Lamborghini produced the LM002 – a high performance SUV that was more than capable of going off-road. Its custom wheels were right at home in the dirt, sand, water, and more. A version was even created to compete in the legendary Paris-Dakar rally, however it was nixed after not being able to get proper support.

So, the heritage is somewhat there, and since Lamborghini is owned by The Volkswagen Group through Audi, the technology for SUVs is there as well. Many were expecting the upcoming Lamborghini Urus SUV to be geared towards ultimate performance on the pavement, following in the footsteps of its sports car siblings. However, this SUV won’t be afraid to dig its custom wheels into some harsh terrain.

Instead of the traditional high-cylinder naturally-aspirated engines, the Urus is expected to use a twin-turbocharged V-8, similar to that found in many Audi models. It’s also based on the same platform as the Volkswagen Touareg, Bentley Bentayga, Porsche Cayenne, and Audi Q7, albeit with quite a large number of changes.

Even still, the Urus is designed to be able to go off road and serve up some serious fun. In one of the newest teasers, Lamborghini shows the Urus engaging ‘SABBIA’ mode – its all-terrain setup. Here, it digs its custom wheels and tires through the desert sand dunes and speeds about with its high-output engine, making for a seriously good time.

It will be very interesting to see a production model do some work off-road when it finally comes out.
