Black Rims and a 911 Engine – the New Porsche Cayman GT4

Time to tear up the track.

Since it first came into the picture, the Porsche Cayman has been criticized for not going far enough. The mid-engined platform provided a better, more capable starting point than its elder sibling, the rear-engined 911. But, not wanting to cut sales on the 911, Porsche kept the Cayman a bit neutered. That’s not the case anymore with the new Cayman GT4. The new sports car has been taken further than ever before with its aerodynamics, a new engine, chassis, and black rims, and it has the Nurburgring lap time to show it off.

Right off the bat, the Porsche Cayman GT4 means business. It looks more aggressive and purposeful than ever before. New air inlets up front suck in cool air to the front radiators and brakes, with a lip spoiler sitting beneath. A large fixed rear wing and gurney flap combo at the rear provides more downforce than ever before for the Cayman. Next to the black rims at the rear sits ‘GT4’ lettering to make it more distinguishable.

Instead of the smaller engine, a 3.8-liter, naturally-aspirated flat-six engine similar to those found in the 911 models is used to drive each of the rear black rims. The flat-six engine produces 385 horsepower at 7,400 RPM and 310 lb-ft. of torque from 4,750 to 6,000 RPM. That power is sent through a six-speed manual transmission – the only type offered in the Cayman GT4. This allows the sports cars to go from 0-62 mph in 4.4 seconds and hit a top speed of 183.3 mph. Its Nurburgring North loop lap time is equally as impressive as it clocked in with a 7-minute, 40-second run.

The new Cayman GT4 was developed at Porsche’s Motorsport department in Weissach and draws bits and pieces from its high-performance, track-focused 911 GT3 sibling. The full brake system and suspension that sits 30 mm lower is borrowed from the 911 GT3 and tailored for the Cayman GT4. The new black rims measure 20 inches in diameter and are so wide that they essentially fill out the fenders with their grippy sport tires. As an option, a Sport Chrono Package with Track Precision App, Club Sport Package, and PCCB ceramic brakes can be ordered as an option for the sports car.

Inside, everything is tailored for the driver. A new 360 mm steering wheel offers better control and grip along with a more direct feel. Both of the front seats offer generous lateral support and hold driver and passenger in place. Their alcantara and leather finish also aids in holding passengers in place. As an option, customers can order CFRP shell seats to reduce weight and get more lateral support as well.

The new Porsche Cayman GT4 with its tuned aerodynamics, bigger engine, black rims, and more will make its debut at the 2015 Geneva International Motor Show.
