And still hit over 200 MPH.

The new Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 is a very impressive machine. The top dog in the Camaro lineup recently went to the High Speed Oval in German at the Automotive Testing Papenburg GmbH to do some top speed testing and spin those rims and tires well into the to triple digits.

“This test caps an impressive list of performance stats for the Camaro ZL1, which was designed to excel at everything,” said Al Oppenheiser, Camaro chief engineer. “It’s the most capable — and fastest —Camaro ever.”

The new Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 has all the tools to go fast. A 10-speed automatic sends all 650 horsepower to the rear rims and tires from the supercharged LT4 engine. A full Magnetic Ride Control system adjusts instantly to changing road conditions for optimum handling. Lightweight 20-inch forged wheels and Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar 3 summer tires provide plenty of grip as well. Behind those rims and tires are powerful six-piston Brembo Monobloc calipers and two-piece rotors.

The high speed oval that the Camaro ZL1 was tasked with achieving its top speed has 2.5-mile straightaways and two 1.3-mile turns with 49.7-degree banking on the top lane to allow vehicles to carry momentum.

For its run, the Camaro ZL1 wore its factory rims and tires with the pressure set to 44 PSI in each tire. For the top speed, the muscle car was tasked with driving the 7.6-mile track in both directions, then averaging the top speeds. In one direction, the ZL1 achieved a 202.3 mph top speed while the other direction yielded a 193.3 mph time. The average of 198 mph is no doubt impressive for a car that starts at just $63,495.

“The ZL1 was developed with high-speed performance in mind, incorporating a balanced aerodynamic package that reduces lift without significantly affecting drag,” said Oppenheiser. “After testing the car in standard settings, which produced the 198-mph average, we set the front and rear camber adjustments to 0 degrees and the tire pressures to the maximum allowable sidewall pressure, and saw the ZL1 average over 200 mph.”
